The origins of Malatya dates back to the Hittite era, regarded as the Town of Melidu back then. It was conquered by Turks in 1075, passed under the control of Mamluks for a while and was conquered again by Yildirim Beyazit in 1392. It joined the Ottoman Empire in 1516. Malatya Airport is situated about 34 km away from Malatya city center. It is the major airport in the region and serves the neighbouring cities.
Malatya Erhac Airport
Malatya Airport is one of the first airports in Türkiye. It became operational in 1941 in Battalgazi Malatya. However, it was later deployed in another area and put into service as of May 1984. Currently it has both international and domestic terminals with an overall annual passenger capacity of 100.000 for international flights and 900.000 for domestic lines.
Transport from Malatya Erhac Airport to the City Center
Malatya Erhac Airport is easily accessed by Havas shuttle buses that arrive at the city center in about 45 minutes.
Buses run on a fixed route passing through the central bus station MASTI as well as Sivas Street. You can check the departure hours and designated stops online.
Alternatively, you can take a taxi or benefit from car rental services offered by Pegasus Airlines.
Public Transport
Malatya has an extensive municipal bus network that makes getting around the city quite easy and effective. Being an innovative transport system trambus works on electric power and has been providing service since 2015. It currently runs on a 36 km line with 57 stops in between MASTI (central bus station) and the University. Commonly used by the locals, the trambus departs every 5 minutes.

Places to see
Malatya has many historical and cultural sites that you should add on top of your itinerary. Malatya Archeology Museum, Yusuf Ziya Mosque, Tashoron Church and Sire Bazaar are among the top tourist attractions in the city. Aslantepe Ruins is a particularly significant place to visit as it is located within a short ride from the center. The archeological excavations demonstrate that the initial settlements in the area date as far as to 5000 BC. Aslantepe Ruins holds great importance as one of the biggest archeological sites in Türkiye and attracts many visitors throughout the year. The admissions are free of charge.
