The airport became operational in 1988. It holds importance as the main transport hub in the region as the airport serves to the surrounding cities of Agri, Ardahan, Artvin and Igdir. Kars Harakani Airport is open to domestic and international flights from various locations. Following the addition of a new terminal in 2013, the total passenger capacity of the airport increased to around 2.5 million people, making it the biggest terminal building of Eastern Anatolia.
